WHO we are

Mahlie’s Mission is a lived‑experience‑led organisation supporting families navigating rare, complex, and life‑altering diagnoses.

We exist because no parent should ever walk out of a diagnosis appointment overwhelmed, unsupported, or alone.

We provide trauma‑aware resources, community connection, advocacy, and practical tools that help families breathe again, understand their child’s diagnosis, and find their next steps.

why we exist

Because no parent should ever sit in a room, hear a diagnosis they can’t pronounce, and be told, “Don’t Google it.”

Because no child should wake from sedation alone.

Because no family should have to fight for basic information, referrals, or recognition of their child’s symptoms.

Because lived experience is expertise — and it deserves a seat at the table.

Mahlie's story

A Journey No Family Is Prepared For

When you become a parent, you imagine first steps, first words,

and the ordinary milestones people take for granted.

You never imagine hearing the words Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Syndrome

— a diagnosis so rare that even specialists pause before answering your questions.

From the moment Mahlie was born, her journey was filled with challenges:

  • talipes requiring casting and boots

  • missed milestones

  • feeding difficulties

  • limited speech

  • and eventually, seizures that no one could explain

Dannielle saw what others didn’t. She noticed the falls, the shaking,

the zoning out, the regression.

She trusted her instincts — even when the system didn’t.

The Search for Answers

What began as “absent seizures” turned out to be multiple seizure types:

  • atonic

  • focal impaired awareness

  • tonic clonic

  • true absence

But these answers didn’t come from doctors — they came from a mother

researching at midnight because no one else could explain what was happening.

The Diagnosis

After months of confusion, mixed messages, and traumatic hospital experiences, Mahlie was diagnosed, the day before her 2nd Birthday, with:

  • Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Syndrome (CBPS)

  • Epilepsy

  • Global Developmental Delay

A rare combination. A life‑changing moment. A new path forward.

The Reality

Mahlie experiences multiple seizures daily. She has lost skills, regained some, and lost others again. Sleep is a struggle. Feeding is a challenge. Communication is limited. And yet — she is strong, determined, and deeply loved.

The Purpose

Mahlie’s story is not just a diagnosis. It is the reason this mission exists. It is the reason families across Australia will now have a place to turn.

About dannielle

Founder • Mother • Advocate • Lived‑Experience Leader

When people meet Dannielle Murfet, they meet a mother who refused to stay silent when the system failed her child. They meet a woman who turned fear into purpose, confusion into clarity, and trauma into a mission that now supports families across Australia.

But before Mahlie’s Mission existed, Dannielle was simply a mum trying to understand what was happening to her daughter — and fighting to be heard in a system that wasn’t built for rare, complex, or misunderstood conditions.

A Mother First

Dannielle is the mother of four children — Millie, Maxton, Makiah, and her youngest, Mahlie. Her family is her world, and her lived experience as a parent of neurodivergent children shaped her early understanding of developmental differences, instinct, and advocacy.

But nothing prepared her for the journey she would face with Mahlie.

From the moment Mahlie was born, Dannielle noticed things others didn’t. She saw the missed milestones, the falls, the shaking, the zoning out, the regression. She trusted her instincts — even when professionals dismissed her concerns.

Her documents describe this clearly:

“I watched my daughter fall, shake, stiffen, zone out, jerk in her sleep, lose balance… and I watched a system fail to see what I saw.”

Those instincts became the foundation of her advocacy.

THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED

After months of confusion, mixed messages, and traumatic hospital experiences, Dannielle was told that Mahlie had:

  • Congenital Bilateral Perisylvian Syndrome (CBPS)

  • Epilepsy

  • Global Developmental Delay

She received this life‑altering diagnosis on a piece of paper — with the words:

“Don’t Google it — you’ll go down a rabbit hole.”

No explanation. No support. No pathway. No plan.

That moment didn’t just change her life — it revealed the deep cracks in the system.

From Lived Experience to Leadership

Dannielle didn’t choose to become an expert in rare neurological conditions — she became one because she had no choice.

She is learning the language of EEGs, MRIs, seizure types, medication side effects, and genetic testing. She learned how to advocate, how to push, how to request second opinions, and how to navigate a system that often left her feeling invisible.

Her words capture this transformation:

“You become the expert. Not by choice, but by necessity.”

This lived expertise is now the backbone of Mahlie’s Mission.

Why She Created Mahlie’s Mission

Dannielle founded Mahlie’s Mission because no family should ever experience what hers did:

  • being told incorrect information

  • receiving a diagnosis without explanation

  • watching their child wake from sedation alone

  • having concerns dismissed

  • navigating a rare condition without guidance

  • fighting for every referral, every answer, every piece of information

“Families like mine do not need miracles. We need clarity, compassion, coordination, and access to expertise.”

Mahlie’s Mission is her answer to that need.

Her Purpose Today

Dannielle is now a lived‑experience advocate, founder, and voice for families navigating rare diagnoses.

Her work focuses on:

  • Diagnosis Support & Appointment Advocacy

  • Trauma‑informed care reform

  • Rare disease pathways

  • Community connection

  • Lived‑experience leadership

  • Awareness and education

She speaks for children who cannot speak for themselves. She stands beside parents who feel lost, overwhelmed, or unheard. She uses her story to create change — not just for Mahlie, but for every child like her.

Her Strength

Dannielle’s strength is not loud or forceful — it is steady, grounded, and deeply human.

It is the strength of a mother who has carried her child through seizures, regression, trauma, and uncertainty. It is the strength of someone who has stayed awake until 2am with a child who can’t sleep, then woken early to care for three more. It is the strength of someone who has walked into appointments alone, heard life‑changing news, and still found the courage to keep going.

Her words say it best:

“There is a unique kind of strength that grows in the heart of a parent whose child cannot speak.”

Her Vision

Dannielle envisions an Australia where:

  • diagnoses are met with knowledge, not confusion

  • families receive clear, factual information at the moment of diagnosis

  • children are never traumatised by medical processes

  • lived experience is valued as expertise

  • families are connected, supported, and empowered

  • no parent ever sits alone in a room hearing a diagnosis they don’t understand

This vision is now the guiding light of Mahlie’s Mission.

In Her Own Words

“This is about turning pain into purpose — not just for my daughter, but for every child like her.”
